Storm Cloud of Stress

by Sara Mendez

Cranky, gloomy, irritable, poor work performance, sleep deprived and moody are just a few ways to describe a stressed out person. Stress can cause many problems with people both physically and emotionally. There are many causes of stress and many different reactions to stress and it is important to look at both of those.

Stress, many people think of this as a “dirty word” and some think of it as an excuse to act poorly. Stress can be caused by many things, financial problems, marital problems or it could be caused from a happy event such as a wedding, children or going on vacation. Stress is about perception. The Sanskrit word Yoga means Union, an entryway to balancing the spiritual, mental and physical aspects of the being. It has the distinction of being the oldest personal development technique known. Practiced for almost 5000 years, the body is gradually conditioned by emphasizing the strengthening of the mind and body, at the same time stimulating the soul - it is both a science and a philosophy.

Yogi and Yogini refer to male and female practitioners of yoga respectively. In practice this is an applied science of the body and mind and it is part of the six orthodox systems that make up Indian Philosophy. It is a vast subject and contains a great deal more than just sitting around in a lotus position just chanting along in unison.

  • Is Yoga Improving Your Health

    by Y P Chinn

Yoga does not seem to command the same form of respect from modern day society as it once did in the past. It is sad that the beauty of yoga has somehow lost its brilliant luster, tarnished by the fast paced lifestyles of today’s globalization. The ancient art of yoga has been represented as a simple concept to help people gain a better understanding of the overall philosophy. The complex nature of its contents may be a little challenging for westerners to understand.

In order to be viewed as a person of wisdom, some people who have been exposed to this ancient art have invested their time to learn a little more, only to gain a superficial understanding of the real essence of yoga and then proceed to talk about it as though they are the recognized experts. Yoga is mainly perceived as a physical activity in the western part of the world. Yoga has been reduced to a physical activity that focuses merely on achieving internal balance and meditation.

Everyone’s talking about this thing called ‘altering consciousness.’ But what does it all mean? Some say it means improving our IQ or memory or sleep patterns. Others think it is becoming psychic, meditating and levitating, or clairvoyance. Still others say it’s all about being able to roll with the punches- and be calm in the face of any storm. Perhaps it is all of this. I’m inclined to think that altering consciousness is shifting, at our core, our entire way of thinking and being in the world in order to live a better life.

I know this sounds very new-age and far-out. That’s because it is.
