What is LASIK? LASIK is a surgical procedure using a laser, doctor and computer guided, to repair vision. If you decide to look into it, this is what you can expect.
You will begin with an exam to see if you have the possibility to have the procedure. There can be reasons you can’t have a LASIK surgery. One example is refraction stability. If you eyes are changing too much, LASIK is too risky.
Eye diseases will also hurt your chances of using a LASIK procedure. If you have had an eye injury, this could also be a problem.
Getting ready for LASIK surgery will work something like this. If you are a contact wearer, you need to stop wearing them for a designated amount of time before surgery. This is because your contact lenses alter the shape of your cornea.
Things are pretty then straight forward. First you need to keep creams, lotions, make up, and perfumes off of you for one day before the surgery. This is to prevent any type of infections or irritations in the eyes.
This operation is done as an outpatient procedure. It takes less than an hour to complete, closer to thirty minutes. You will need someone to drive you home after the surgery. You will be medicated and could have blurred vision as well.
You will need to fix your eye on a light during the procedure. The ability to do this is required for the procedure. If you aren’t able to focus on the light for one minute, you won’t be allowed to have LASIK surgery.
Once your eye is fixed on this point the laser will be turned on. Then the laser will remove corneal tissue to correct the shape of the eve. A computer has been programmed to control the laser to vaporize the desired tissue.
You need to allow this flap to heal. There are no stitches so you cannot bump or rub your eyes for a while. You will be given eye shields to use when you sleep so nothing goes wrong.
Strenuous contact activities, like football, should be avoided for at least a month. Keeping creams and makeup out of the eye area to avoid infection is critical. Swimming and hot tubs should be avoided for a couple of months.
Many people have had spectacular results with LASIK. People that couldn’t see well at all have achieved 20/20 vision. Although this is a relative new field, the results appear permanent.
